COMPOSITIONS EMPLOYING THE ALTO FLUTE AND BASS FLUTE (or Bass Recorder)

William Gaddis in New York in 1987

"The flute is not an instrument that is expressive of moral character: it is too exciting."
Aristotle, quoted by William Gaddis in the novel JR.

The Recital Aria KUBLA KHAN employs the alto flute as an important part of an instrumental trio that accompanies a tenor soloist, in my setting of the well-known Coleridge poem.

The bass flute appears in the quartet WILLOW, or, FREEDOM'S FAVOR'S FALCONER, written for non-specific instrumental ensemble but with the idea in mind that the combination of three flutes and bass flute would be likely nomenclature. In the event this piece were played on recorders, a bass recorder would be called for.
